The Chrisa SAYS:

We are on the Cross, the main village and port of Donoussa and tall gaze night day the sea but never to get enough. We see the sun rising from the Virgin Mary, the boat coming from Astypalea, the prickly pears to ripen and drink coffee beside the bougainvillea and basil ... integral members of our group.

Getting dark when we see the sun setting behind the island of Naxos, the lights in the village to light up the beach to empty. We sit on the bench of the court or anyone in the balcony, chatting or sharing silence, our evening primrose broken nose. We look at the sea, the vast sky and do not even dream about. We are living the dream. And you can see when the full moon comes what we live ... All the time you will find us. This is our home. And it is wide open for all. Simple and clean our rooms and different from each other because we are advocates of simplicity and diversity of people.

If you want to know and ... our chougia, Nata: Our favorite color is white and our favorite word ... 'bleach'! Delude unlimited respect for the water as it is an endangered species in the Cyclades and we have a weakness in flogitses candle. These simple. The ... of hospitality and other praises will judge the story. You, of course. Friends (anymore) Chryssa say: "Chrysa put raki! We come home! "

Donousa

Donousa or den or Stenoza or Spinoza or Viridem ... Inside the centuries, many names - and other so perhaps we will never know. For a tiny place in the middle of the Aegean. On the map a dot. In the minds of those who knew her, plank to get caught in the middle of winter in their daily life. And the hearts of those who live, home. And life. And place of paradise.

H story of long and dark. Archaeological findings in Vathi Limenari dating from the Geometric period, testify that the centuries Donoussa passed quickly. Participant of the Cycladic civilization, very close to Keros (where they found the famous figurines of "harpist" and "Piper"), Donousa is referred to as a place of exile during the Roman period, as a hideout for pirates and later, in early 1800, as summer residence shepherds from Amorgos.
They say that in recent years was first inhabited around 1830, but information is scarce and memories are saved by word of mouth, blurred anymore to tired eyes of the elders who are close to a century old.

In early 1900, the island had around 3,000 people. In low stone houses nesting large families. Campos (today's Cross) was by then the capital of the island. Messaria (formerly Daybreak) Mersini and Kalotaritissa (or Kaloterousa) was, as today, the other villages of Donousa.
The mines that operated in Cedar (Center say the locals) until 1938, except for iron, aluminum, copper and atsacha gave work and family.
Onions and tobacco were the crops that helped significantly residents up to the 50s.
The wars have passed and from this place (who saves?) With bombing, starvation, Italian occupation, German occupation, British allies.
The 60s came with poverty, abandonment, migration. The hands became fewer and the fields slowly ravaged. This was followed by another 20 difficult years.
Shortly before electricity, around 1980, came the first tourists to the island. After done the port and life changed in Donousa ...
But the way it rises and the sun sets, painting the sky with many colors that can not withstand your eyes, will never change. The fierce north wind as it takes to blow cleans the horizon from Patmos to Santorini, we will not stop blowing. The sea that as kalosynepsei fills boats and boats, will still time to sweeten your soul. And the sky at night that bends as if the weight of so many stars, will accompany the dreams and drives away nightmares ...
Donoussa winter sleep early and wake early - like the sun. But summer is not sleeping almost never. A ships arriving at midnight, a festivities that make you forget time, one that paints the moon sea silver mean a promising sunrise ... There is always a reason to otherwise count the clock in Donousa.

 CROSS

The Cross is the largest settlement on the island and was named after the church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was first built in the village in the late 1800s, close to the creek. A large storm swept away but the church which was destroyed. Some time later, the image of the Exaltation found on a beach of Amorgos, and the church was rebuilt in 1902, at the point where it stands today. Since then, on 14 September each, Donousa puts the well and celebrating the Grace of the Cross, with many people coming from the surrounding islands to worship and celebrate the feast stay.

The Cross there are rooms that are sufficient to meet the needs of visitors during the summer months, but for the "issue" between July 15 to August 15 and early booking is proved wise move and pulls out excess discomfort.
Here everything is at your feet: In "Wave" will drink coffee beside the small pier, will buy the necessities, will sit for a cold beer or if you are lucky you will taste locally produced goat. Here you will meet the locals who drink their coffee and lunch will remember how it was the cafes in Greece a few decades ago. Good evening, conversations, stories, "fresh" new "old" news ... Everything here.
Two steps above, "Captain George", ouzo. Music, dancing, singing and good company are additional supplies ... Just beyond the "Meltemi". Good afternoon and evening dining. What pulls your appetite by the sea. In "Corona Borealis", two steps from the sand, in the shade of thalassodentron will enjoy breakfast, exquisite dishes of Maritsas, a cool beer in the afternoon or an evening drink.
If lachtariseis fresh fish, ask the. All shops care about it enough to help and circumstances.
In "Beyond Always", the other half of the Cross (a village which is separated from the "creek" and the beach), the "Sun-kingdoms" with wonderful views is another option for good food.
Opposite the harbor, "The Hedgehog". Stone bar, open from morning until ... the next morning. Chess, backgammon and other games, great music evenings ... siesta, the best time for a tidy ice cream. Do not forget to try the amazing crepes.
Next to the "Meltemi", you will find the oven with a thousand delights. The galaktomboureko excels. Above the oven, the "Sea Horse": gyros and souvlaki - so to not forget ...
For other needs (newspapers, magazines, cigarettes, souvenirs, etc) will go to "Pothiti", next to the beach. There is also a mini market with all the necessities, near the Church of the Cross.
